Clinic Specialties

Families with Troubled Teens

At our clinic we specialize in working with families who have children and teens who exhibit anti-social behaviour. Some of our clients may display one or all of the following behaviours: physical aggression, verbal aggression, property destruction, drug use, school struggles (e.g., truancy, academic performance), trouble with the law, suicidal ideation, promiscuity, self-harm, etc. Additionally, the child’s behaviour is typically severe, occurring daily to multiple times per week. It is our role to work with the parent and or whole family to determine what the key factors are for the ongoing occurrence of the behaviour and to work with the family as a team to build solutions. Our approach is entirely positive and built on the strengths of the family. Our objective is to identify goals with each family that are realistic and achievable that ultimately aid the parent in regaining control of their teen and start to rebuild family relationships.

Aggression and Anger Concerns

Many people struggle day to day with anger issues. It is not uncommon for us to see individuals who have been involved in regular verbal or physical altercations with others, some of which have resulted in an arrest and court appointed anger management training. Our typical client who experiences feelings of anger on a regular basis may experience behavioural, physical, cognitive, and psychosocial symptoms. Hearts and Minds is excited to offer one on one anger management programs for teens and adults. As opposed to attending an anger management program in a group format, our program offers an individualized approach to controlling anger issues in a safe, non-judgemental environment.

Goals of the program:
  • Identifying all possible factors that contribute to anger issues
  • Prioritization of key factors contributing to anger and goal formulation
  • Identifying anger triggers and physiological responses
  • Increase in verbal communication and conflict resolution
  • Increase frustration tolerance and coping skills
  • Build verbal de-escalation techniques
  • Decrease impulsive and maladaptive behaviour
